The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLB is on sale in Australia, and the headline is a lower entry price plus a first for the badge: a fully electric GLB. The petrol GLB 200 now opens at $65,400 before on-road costs, down from $67,600, a cut of $2,200.
Four grades, two of them electric
Above the 200, the petrol GLB 220 4MATIC with all-wheel drive is $76,100 before on-road costs. The two electric grades are the front-wheel-drive GLB 250 Plus at $74,990 and the all-wheel-drive GLB 350 4MATIC at $86,200, both before on-road costs. It is the first time Mercedes-Benz has sold an electric GLB here, and it drops the small SUV into the thick of a premium fight against the Audi Q3, the BMW X1 and the Mini Countryman.
Cartell Assessment
Cutting the entry price while adding an electric option is a smart move in a segment where badge buyers still want choice. The petrol 200 at $65,400 keeps the GLB within reach, and the electric 250 Plus gives Mercedes an answer to electric rivals without forcing buyers out of combustion.
AU Outlook
Expect Mercedes to lean on the GLB as a volume entry point into the brand. With both petrol and electric under one roof, it is well placed as buyers weigh up the switch, and the lower sticker should help it hold ground against a sharpening German and Chinese field.
