Tesla has pulled the plug on the Cybertruck for Australia. In an email sent to local reservation holders on 23 October 2026, the company said that after careful consideration, plans to produce the Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand have been discontinued. There will be no right-hand drive version.

Deposits come back in full

Every reservation is being cancelled and every $150 deposit refunded, with Tesla saying the money will be returned within 30 days and a separate email to follow confirming the details. Australians have waited a long time for this truck: reservations opened late in 2019, tens of thousands of local buyers put money down between 2019 and 2021, and the reservation page was quietly removed in May 2022. The stainless steel ute was only ever built in left-hand drive.

Cartell Assessment

This is a clean ending to a saga that had already stalled. The Cybertruck was never engineered for right-hand drive markets, and global demand has cooled, so a formal cancellation was the honest call. For the buyers involved, a full refund inside 30 days is the right outcome, even if it closes the door on a seven-year wait.

AU Outlook

With the Cybertruck gone, Tesla's local focus stays on the Model Y and Model 3, plus whatever the refreshed range brings next. Buyers who still want an electric ute will look to the BYD Shark 6 and a growing field of plug-in hybrid utes instead.
