MG is considering a hybrid version of its U9 dual-cab ute for Australia, aimed squarely at the BYD Shark 6, Ford Ranger PHEV and GWM Cannon Alpha. A local arrival is being targeted for around the middle of 2027.
What is on the table
The current U9 sold in Australia is diesel only, powered by a 2.5 litre turbo four making 160kW and 520Nm, paired with a ZF 8 speed automatic and a 4x4 system with front and rear diff locks. It is already the longest dual-cab ute on sale here. A hybrid variant would add electrified power to that package, putting MG in the same fight as the plug in hybrid and range extender utes now crowding the segment.
Where the diesel U9 sits today
The diesel U9 range starts at $52,990 for the Explore and runs to $60,990 for the top spec Explore Pro, with 3,500kg braked towing and a 5 star ANCAP rating across the line. MG backs it with a 7 year, unlimited kilometre warranty. None of that changes yet. The hybrid is still at the consideration stage, with no confirmed powertrain output, pricing or on sale date.

Length was never the U9's problem, power and efficiency were. A hybrid model that closes the gap to the Shark 6 on refinement and fuel use would make the U9 a genuine cross shop rather than a value alternative. The timing matters too. By the middle of 2027 the ute segment will be even more crowded with electrified options, so MG cannot afford to be late twice.
AU Outlook
Watch for MG to confirm powertrain details as the Shark 6, Ranger PHEV and Cannon Alpha keep taking sales from traditional diesel utes. If MG prices a hybrid U9 close to Shark 6 money, expect it to get a serious look from tradies and tourers who have been waiting for more choice at the top of the ute market.
