Toyota is recalling 1,101 bZ4X electric SUVs built between 22 September 2025 and 15 January 2026, after a software fault in the battery management system was found that can shut the whole electric drive system down while the car is moving. The fault triggers an EV System Malfunction warning on the dash, and in the worst case it cuts the motive power that gets the car moving, at speed, on a public road.
What is wrong
A battery software issue can trigger the fault, cutting drive power without warning. It is the kind of failure that turns a highway merge into a hazard rather than a dashboard light you can deal with at the next service.
The fix
Toyota says the fix is a free 45 minute software update, done at any Toyota dealer. Owners should book in as soon as the recall notice lands rather than waiting for the next scheduled service.

This is the bZ4X's third recall since it launched in Australia in 2024, and three recalls into a two year run says more about Toyota's software quality control than any single fault does. Toyota built its reputation on mechanical reliability, not on shipping code, and each of the bZ4X's recalls has landed in the software and electronics layer rather than the wear and tear that used to define a Toyota recall. For a company selling the bZ4X on the Toyota name, that pattern is the story now, not the spec sheet.
