Toyota Australia has launched a customer service exercise covering up to 16,995 Toyota HiLux Rogue utes built between 2020 and 2024. The problem sits in the tub: the Rogue's standard power operated roller cover can jam partway, and if it does, the motor can keep straining and overheat.
What Toyota will do
This is a fix campaign rather than a formal safety recall, and the remedy is free. Dealers will inspect the roller cover motor for signs of overheating and replace it if needed, adjust the track the cover runs in, and update the control software so the motor gives up before it cooks itself. Toyota is writing to affected owners, and only the Rogue is involved because it is the sole HiLux grade with the powered cover as standard.

The HiLux is the national ute, and the Rogue has been the money grade for years, so 16,995 examples is not a small pool. Credit where due: Toyota is catching this through a service campaign before it becomes a fire statistic.
AU Outlook
If you run a 2020 to 2024 Rogue, wait for the letter or call your dealer now. It costs nothing, and an overheating motor centimetres from your tray liner is not something to sit on.
