Australia just posted its strongest July on record. Official industry figures show 108,577 new vehicles delivered, up 4.2 per cent on July 2025.
The Toyota RAV4 is back on top of the sales charts with 5,564 sales, ahead of the HiLux on 4,721 and the Tesla Model Y on 4,644. About four in ten of those RAV4s were plug-in hybrids, which tells you where family SUV demand is heading.
The electric share keeps holding
Battery electric vehicles took 23,510 sales for a 21.7 per cent share of the market, the third month running above 20 per cent. Add hybrids and plug-ins and electrified vehicles accounted for 48.4 per cent of everything sold in July. Nearly half the new cars Australia bought last month had a plug or a hybrid badge.
BYD held second place among brands with 7,857 sales, behind only Toyota.
Cartell Assessment
Electrified is not the future anymore, it is the receipt. When the top selling car in the country moves 40 per cent of its volume as a plug-in hybrid, and one in five new vehicles overall is fully electric, the transition has stopped being a forecast and started being a habit. The record total also puts to bed any talk of a soft market: buyers are out in force, they are just buying differently.
AU Outlook
Watch two numbers through spring: whether BEV share can hold above 20 per cent as novated lease settings evolve, and whether the RAV4 keeps the top spot as PHEV supply improves. On current form, both look likely.
