One for the enthusiasts. Volkswagen has paused development of the electric Golf, the long-rumoured ID. Golf, pushing it from a planned 2028 out to the early 2030s. The company says it is pausing the project, not cancelling it.
Why it has stalled
The delay comes as Volkswagen bleeds money in Europe, with a third-quarter operating loss of about 5.86 billion euros weighing on its spending plans. The Volkswagen Golf name has carried the brand for five decades, but the electric version keeps slipping down the priority list, from 2028 to 2030 and now to the early 2030s. Volkswagen has never confirmed the electric Golf for Australia, so nothing changes for local buyers today.
Cartell Assessment
The Golf deserves better than limbo. It is one of the few mainstream nameplates with genuine heritage on both the hot-hatch and the everyday-car fronts, and letting it drift is a quiet risk to the badge. Australian Golf sales tell their own story, down from more than 22,000 in 2015 to about 3,000 last year, so the local business case was always going to be thin.
AU Outlook
For now the current petrol Golf carries on, and an electric replacement is years away at best. If Volkswagen does revive the project, Australia would still need a separate local business case to bring it here. We will update if the company firms up a timeline or confirms the car for our market.
