What is it?

The Jaecoo J7 is Chery's premium spin-off mid-size SUV. Petrol grades run a 1.6-litre turbo four (137 kW / 275 Nm) through a 7-speed DCT, with FWD on Core and Track and 50:50 AWD on Ridge. The Super Hybrid System (SHS) variants add a 1.5-litre turbo generator paired with an electric motor and an 18.3 kWh LFP battery for up to 106 km EV range and around 1,200 km combined. 8-year unlimited-km warranty, 5-star ANCAP under the 2025 protocol on the SHS.

The lineup runs from Core 1.6T FWD at $34,990 drive-away, through to SHS Summit PHEV at $47,990 drive-away. Warranty cover sits at 8 years, unlimited km.

Interior and Technology

SHS Summit makes 255 kW combined, more than the RAV4 PHEV (225 kW). 106 km claimed EV-only range from an 18.3 kWh LFP battery, 8-year unlimited-km warranty, 5-star ANCAP under the 2025 protocol.

340 L petrol boot trails CX-5 (438 L) and RAV4 (542 L). The 1.6T petrol DCT has hesitation on hill starts and reverse. The brand is new to Australia so resale is unproven, and the Omoda Jaecoo dealer network is still expanding outside metro markets.

Should you buy the J7?

  • Warranty: 8 years, unlimited km. Battery: 8 years, unlimited km (SHS).
  • 5-star ANCAP (2025), full driver-assist suite.
  • 340 L boot, segment-competitive cargo space.
  • Braked towing rated at 1,500 kg.

Reasons to wait

  • 340 L petrol boot trails CX-5 (438 L) and RAV4 (542 L). The 1.6T petrol DCT has hesitation on hill starts and reverse. The brand is new to Australia so resale is unproven, and the Omoda Jaecoo dealer network is still expanding outside metro markets.
  • You want a bigger petrol boot (CX-5 438 L, RAV4 542 L), longer dealer history in regional markets, or you reject DCT hesitation on hill starts and reverse manoeuvres.
  • Drive the 1.6T DCT through a tight hill-start scenario before signing on the petrol variants. SHS PHEV pricing positions tightly against the Outlander PHEV, run the numbers on government incentives in your state.
  • Top trim climbs to $47,990 drive-away.
