A plug-in hybrid used to be a $60,000 decision. Not any more. The cheapest PHEV in Australia is now $25,990 drive-away, and there are nine plug-in hybrids you can buy for under $50,000, most of them from Chinese brands that are cutting hard into the family SUV market. This guide ranks them by price, lowest first, and tells you which ones are worth the drive.
How we ranked them: every price below was checked on 2 October 2026 directly against each brand's Australian website or configurator. Brands quote prices in different ways, so we state the basis every time. Drive-away includes registration, stamp duty, CTP and dealer delivery; "plus on-road costs" means those charges are still to come, typically a few thousand dollars depending on your state. Where a brand only shows a drive-away price after you enter a postcode, we used Melbourne 3000. Several cars also carry cashback offers with October or December deadlines, which we list separately so you can see the price with and without the deal.
Why a PHEV at all: a plug-in hybrid has a battery big enough to cover most daily driving on electricity, charged at home, plus a petrol engine for long trips. If you can plug in at home, it can run like an EV during the week. If you cannot, a regular hybrid is usually the better buy, and our cheapest hybrid SUVs guide covers those. Not sure which way to go? Start with hybrid vs electric.
1. BYD Atto 2 DM-i Essential: $25,990 drive-away

The cheapest plug-in hybrid in the country is the BYD Atto 2 DM-i Essential at $25,990 drive-away, a launch offer for retail orders placed between 24 September and 24 December 2026 and delivered by 31 December. Metallic paint is extra. That is less than many petrol small SUVs, and it puts a plug and BYD's DM-i hybrid system in reach of first car buyers and second car households. BYD sells a separate all-electric Atto 2, so check you are looking at the DM-i when you shop. Our news desk covered why BYD is holding these prices down: BYD holds the Atto 2 at $24,990.
2. BYD Sealion 5 Essential: $33,990 plus on-road costs

The BYD Sealion 5 is the cheapest mid-size plug-in SUV: $33,990 plus on-road costs for the Essential and $37,990 for the Premium, per BYD's own configurator, which quotes the Essential at $37,498 drive-away for a private buyer in NSW. On top of that, BYD is running a $4,000 cashback on both grades for orders from 1 October to 21 December 2026 (delivered by 31 December). It makes 156kW, does 0 to 100km/h in 7.7 seconds in Essential form, and BYD quotes a combined petrol and electric range of 1,001km for the Essential and 1,030km for the Premium on the NEDC cycle. Maximum boot space is 1,410 litres. Warranty is six years or 150,000km, with eight years or 160,000km on the battery. We first reported the price here: BYD's cheapest PHEV does 1,000km on a tank.
3. BYD Seal 6 Essential: $34,990 plus on-road costs

Not everyone wants an SUV. The BYD Seal 6 is a plug-in hybrid sedan at $34,990 plus on-road costs, with the Seal 6 Touring wagon from $39,990. Both are in BYD's $4,000 cashback offer to 21 December. BYD quotes 130kW, 0 to 100km/h in 8.9 seconds, 70km of electric range on the NEDC cycle and 1.1L/100km combined. Seventy kilometres covers most commutes both ways, which is the whole point of a PHEV. If you are a sedan or wagon buyer, there is nothing else on this list for you.

The Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid Urban is $36,478 drive-away in Melbourne per Chery's own price tool, with the Ultimate at $40,646. Chery also offers either a $2,000 cashback or 0.70 per cent finance. The warranty is the headline: seven years unlimited kilometres on the car and eight years unlimited kilometres on the battery. Our news story has the full MY27 update: Jaecoo J7 gains AWD.

The BYD Sealion 6 is a size up from the Sealion 5 and the most established BYD plug-in here. The Essential is $42,990 plus on-road costs, the Dynamic Extended $46,990 and the AWD Premium Extended $52,990, and all three get the $4,000 cashback to 21 December. The Essential makes 160kW and 300Nm, with 92km of electric range (BYD's figure, measured from 25 to 100 per cent charge) and 1,440 litres of maximum boot space. The AWD Premium has 238kW for a 5.9 second 0 to 100km/h time, but it sits just over our $50,000 line.
8. Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid Urban: $46,898 drive-away

Need seven seats? The Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid Urban is the cheapest seven-seat plug-in hybrid we could verify, at $46,898 drive-away in Melbourne, with the Ultimate at $51,066. It shares the Tiggo 7's 18.4kWh battery and 150kW/310Nm motor, with a claimed 95km of electric range (NEDC) and 1.3L/100km, plus the same seven year car and eight year battery warranties. For other options, see our best seven seater SUVs guide.
9. MG HS Excite Super Hybrid: $48,990 drive-away ($42,990 with cashback)

The MG HS Excite Super Hybrid is $48,990 drive-away on MG's offers page, but a $6,000 cashback to 31 October takes it to $42,990, which would move it up this list for anyone who orders this month. The better equipped Essence Super Hybrid is $52,990, or $46,990 after the same cashback. MG backs the HS with its 10 year warranty, conditions apply. MG's model page did not show the Super Hybrid's electric range when we checked, so we have not quoted one.
What did not make the list
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the plug-in Toyota RAV4 both start well above $50,000. GWM's Haval H6GT Ultra PHEV is $54,990 drive-away in Victoria. The new GWM Haval H7 plug-in hybrid is listed on GWM's site but without a published price yet, and Geely's Emgrand L EM-i sedan is still marked coming soon. We will add them when the numbers are public. Toyota also confirmed a cheaper RAV4 plug-in is on the way: cheaper RAV4 PHEV confirmed.
What a charge actually costs
Here is a simple worked example, with the assumptions spelled out. An 18.4kWh battery, like the Tiggo 7 or J7, charged from empty at a home tariff of 30c per kWh costs about $5.50, and on the brands' claims covers roughly 90 to 100km. Real world electric range will usually be lower, especially at highway speeds and in winter, but even at 60km a day the weekday commute can run with the engine off. On an off-peak or solar tariff the cost falls further. Skip the charging and you are carrying a heavy battery around for nothing, so be honest about whether you will plug in. One more thing: plug-in hybrids lost their fringe benefits tax exemption for novated leases from 1 April 2025, so if you are leasing, run the numbers in our novated lease guide.
Cartell Assessment
The price floor has collapsed. Six of these nine have a headline price under $40,000. For pure value, the Atto 2 DM-i is unbeatable at $25,990 drive-away if a small SUV is big enough. For a family car, the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid at $36,478 drive-away gives you the biggest battery and a seven year warranty, and the Sealion 5 becomes the sharpest buy of all with BYD's $4,000 cashback. The Jaecoo J7 has the longest warranty, and the Tiggo 8 is the seven seater to beat. Our pick for most buyers who can charge at home: the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid.
AU Outlook
Expect these prices to keep moving. BYD's cashbacks run to 21 December, the Jaecoo, Geely and MG deals end on 31 October, and new arrivals like the Haval H7 PHEV and a cheaper RAV4 plug-in will push the field again. Always confirm the drive-away price for your postcode before you sign, because on-road costs vary by state.
