What is it?

The 982 Cayman is the third-generation Porsche Cayman, launched in 2016 and now in the final months of petrol production ahead of the all-electric successor. Strict mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-seat layout. Four grades have populated the Australian range: the base 2.0T Cayman, 2.5T Cayman S, the NA 4.0 flat-six GTS, and the 911 GT3-sourced 4.0 flat-six GT4 RS at 9,000 rpm. Only the base Cayman remains in the Porsche Australia configurator with limited stock, all higher allocations are sold out.

The lineup runs from 718 Cayman at $166,400 plus on-roads, through to 718 Cayman GT4 RS at $354,400 plus on-roads. Warranty cover sits at 3 years, unlimited km.

Interior and Technology

Mid-engine flat-six 982 GTS 4.0 and GT4 RS are appreciating modern classics. The chassis is regarded as the best driver's car under $200k of the last decade. The last petrol Cayman before the all-electric successor, with 6-speed manual still available on the base car.

Only the base 2.0T Cayman is in the Porsche Australia configurator now, with limited stock. S, GTS 4.0 and GT4 RS allocations for Australia are sold out. The 2.0T four-pot drone has split critics for the full 982 generation. 3-year warranty is short by mainstream standards.

Should you buy the 718 Cayman?

Reasons to buy

  • Mid-engine flat-six 982 GTS 4.0 and GT4 RS are appreciating modern classics. The chassis is regarded as the best driver's car under $200k of the last decade. The last petrol Cayman before the all-electric successor, with 6-speed manual still available on the base car.
  • Warranty: 3 years, unlimited km.
  • 150 L front + 273 L rear boot, segment-competitive cargo space.

Reasons to wait

  • Only the base 2.0T Cayman is in the Porsche Australia configurator now, with limited stock. S, GTS 4.0 and GT4 RS allocations for Australia are sold out. The 2.0T four-pot drone has split critics for the full 982 generation. 3-year warranty is short by mainstream standards.
  • You want a front-engine performance coupe (BMW M4), a more affordable RWD sports car (Mazda MX-5), or a mid-engine V6 alternative (Lotus Emira, Maserati MC20 at very different money).
  • If you want a 982 in 2026, the conversation is with your local Porsche Centre about remaining base Cayman stock or with the approved pre-owned network. The next-generation electric Cayman lands soon and could reset values on either side.
  • Top trim climbs to $354,400 plus on-roads.
