Special-edition utes are a category that loves to take a few thousand dollars off you for not very much in return. The FX4 is the rare exception — Ford has actually thought about it.

You get the blackout grille and badging that everyone wants, but you also get the bigger wheels, the upgraded interior trim, and a tow bar already plumbed. The maths works, even if you walk into the dealer wanting to be cynical about it.

If you were going to buy a top-spec Wildtrak anyway, the FX4 is a smarter buy. If you're stretching from a base XLT, save your money — the standard car still does the job.
