Australia crossed a line in August. Battery electric vehicles outsold both petrol-only and diesel-only new cars for the first time, with 27,078 BEVs delivered against 25,824 petrol and 23,608 diesel. That put EVs at 24.9 per cent of a 108,760-vehicle market, a 171 per cent jump on the same month last year.
The cars doing the work
The Tesla Model Y finished number one outright with 6,414 sales, and the Toyota RAV4 came second. Toyota held on as the top brand, but BYD sat second for the fifth month running. Add hybrids and plug-in hybrids and electrified vehicles took 51.8 per cent of the market, the first month petrol and diesel only cars have been the minority.

Say what you like about EVs, the country just voted with its wallet. A single strong month is not a permanent shift, but a Tesla and a Toyota hybrid leading the charts tells you where the mainstream now sits.
AU Outlook
The question from here is whether cheaper Chinese EVs keep the momentum through the summer, or whether the end of some incentives slows it. Either way, August 2026 is the month the maths changed.
