MG has confirmed Australian pricing for its first all-electric ute. The U9 EV starts at $78,990 before on-road costs, and Australia becomes the first market globally to launch it when the ute arrives in the fourth quarter of 2026. Drive-away pricing will land higher once on-road costs are added.
What $78,990 buys
The U9 EV is offered in a single, well-equipped dual-motor all-wheel-drive spec. The two motors make 325kW and 700Nm, enough for a claimed 0 to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds. A 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate battery gives 430km of WLTP range. DC fast charging peaks at 115kW (20 to 80 per cent in about 42 minutes) and AC charging runs to 11kW.
The numbers that matter to ute buyers
Braked towing is rated at 3,500kg, matching a diesel dual-cab, with 750kg unbraked and a 685kg payload. There is a 236-litre front boot, vehicle-to-load at up to 6.6kW externally, four-wheel air suspension and a five-star ANCAP rating. MG covers it with a seven-year warranty when serviced through its dealer network.
Cartell Assessment
The electric ute class barely exists here, so MG is planting a flag early. The Toyota HiLux BEV is still coming and claims only 240km of range, while the KGM Musso EV is the other rival. At $78,990 the U9 EV is priced like a high-spec diesel dual-cab, not a budget workhorse.
AU Outlook
The question is charging on a job site or a tow day, where 115kW DC and a 102.2kWh pack will be the real test. Get the running costs right and MG owns a segment before anyone else shows up.
