Toyota Australia has trimmed its full-year sales ambition from more than 230,000 to more than 220,000, a revision its sales boss puts down to logistics rather than any drop in demand. It lands in the same week the brand posted 20,649 sales for October, up 4.7 per cent, with the Toyota HiLux back on top of the national charts on 5,954.

Shipping, not demand

Sales chief John Pappas told media the problem is getting cars to Australia, a matter of logistics and shipping, not customers walking away. Toyota sat on 173,593 sales to the end of October, so it needs about 46,400 more across November and December, roughly 23,200 a month, to clear 220,000. Pappas still expects a strong fourth quarter, though Toyota later walked back an earlier suggestion of a Q4 record.

Cartell Assessment

A lower target is not a crisis when you are still the biggest brand in the country by a street, Toyota led October on 20,649 against BYD's 10,025. The honest read is that Toyota could sell more RAV4s and HiLuxes than it can physically land, which is a supply story, not a demand story. It also leaves room for rivals with stock on the ground to pick off impatient buyers.

AU Outlook

Expect Toyota to feed its fastest sellers, the RAV4 and the HiLux, through the run-out, and watch the shipping pipeline. If the cars arrive, 220,000 is well within reach. If they do not, the Chinese brands with local stock are the ones that gain.
