GWM has revealed a plug in hybrid version of the mid size Cannon, the Cannon Hi4-T. It joins the larger Cannon Alpha Hi4-T, which makes GWM the only brand in Australia with two plug in hybrid utes on the way.
What the Hi4-T brings
A 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine pairs with an electric motor and a 33.1kWh battery for a combined 310kW and 750Nm. GWM claims 115km of electric range and 1037km of combined range on the NEDC cycle, along with fuel use of 2.4L per 100km on that same test, figures worth treating as a ceiling rather than a real world number. Mechanical four wheel drive is retained, along with the full 3500kg braked towing capacity, and the tub gets 230V power outlets for running a camp fridge or tools off the battery.
Cartell Assessment
Keeping proper 4WD hardware and the full tow rating while adding a plug is the right call for a ute buyer who actually works or tows. GWM landing two plug in hybrid utes before most rivals have one is a genuine head start, and the Shark 6 now has company to worry about rather than a clear run at the segment.
AU Outlook
The Cannon Hi4-T lands here later this year with pricing still to be confirmed. Expect GWM to position it as the more affordable of its two plug in hybrid utes, sitting below the Cannon Alpha Hi4-T and undercutting the Shark 6 on price while matching or beating it on towing and electric range.
