GWM has landed its mid-size GWM Cannon Hi4-T, a plug-in hybrid ute that arrives in showrooms this month as the cheapest PHEV ute on sale in Australia. Launch pricing starts from $47,990 drive-away, with pre-orders already open.
Price and what it tows
The Cannon Hi4-T comes in two grades, the Lux listed at $50,990 drive-away and the Ultra at $54,990 drive-away for private buyers. The launch deal brings the entry car to $47,990 drive-away, and buyers can take either a $2,000 fuel card or a $2,000 drive-away bonus, with the offers running to 31 October 2026. Power comes from a 2.0 litre turbo-petrol four and an electric motor for a combined 310 kW and 750 Nm, driving through a nine-speed hybrid automatic and mechanical four-wheel drive. A 33.1 kWh battery gives up to 115 km of electric range on the NEDC test, and it still tows 3,500 kg braked.
Cartell Assessment
This is the sharpest plug-in ute price yet. At $47,990 drive-away it sits under the JAC Hunter PHEV and well below a BYD Shark 6, while keeping a full 3,500 kg tow rating. The open questions are resale and real-world economy once the battery is flat, where GWM quotes 2.4 litres per 100km.
AU Outlook
Expect the Hi4-T to pressure every plug-in ute on price through the end of the year, and to push rivals into matching launch deals. If a PHEV ute is on your shortlist, the launch offer window closes on 31 October.
